Joining an email list as a subscriber is one of the best ways to support a blogger you enjoy content from! Did you know this? Let me tell you 5 reasons why you should join an email list.
People tend to fear joining email lists, and I get it! I used to be veryyy hesitant to give out my email. Don’t clutter my inbox please! But- I wanted to share another side of email that may change your mind
1. Who Owns the List
Email can serve as a direct method of communication, especially if social media sites ever go down or a content creator loses access to their account.
With email, the creator owns their list! Unlike social media entities who technically “own” your followers.
2. Direct Communication
Email is direct form of communication that ensures a message will reach your audience, no algorithms filtering and hiding content. This means if their is a content creator you enjoy- you don’t have to worry about stalking social media accounts and trying to make the algorithm work for you. Creators generally send the most important information out to email subscribers, so you can be sure to never miss an important article, link or update.
3. Easy to Find and Follow Links
Historically, if you were an Instagram account under 10K it was impossible to get direct links to followers from stories. Email was an easier way to get direct links seen and to your audience.
Luckily, smaller accounts can now easily post links too. But if you’re like me, if you’re scrolling Instagram stories you may not be in the mood to stop, follow a link, and get out of your instagram trance.
Finding and following links in emails often helps to make sure you are doing it on your time, when you choose to open the email. Not get caught off guard while zoning out on social media.
4. Great For More “In Depth” Information
Email is great for topics I want to share and discuss more extensively (ie- mixing one brand’s color in another brand’s paint). If I find its a topic that gets a lot of traction, or people want to learn more I can and will turn it into a dedicated blog post. It’s a great place to learn, communicate back and forth, and ask questions.
Instagram has turned into a platform to catch and get quick attention. Performance often suffers if you try to share too much- social media scrollers don’t have time for that! So if there is a content creator you find inspiring and wanting to learn from, the deep knowledge is often reserved for the email subscribers.
5. Never miss an update!
I personally love being an email subscriber to my favorite bloggers. That way I can ensure I’m keeping up with what’s going on, without feeling a need to obsessively stalk their social media accounts (it’s hard to reliably make sure you see all of someone content because again, algorithms)
I typically *try* to send biweekly emails to update and include helpful links, but sometimes it ends up being more like 1 email a month. Topics tend to follow themes based on projects I’ve been working on, blog post round ups, or sharing more in depth information on a topic followers have expressed interest in.
Last but not least, I want to put my money where my mouth is and share a couple content creators I subscribe to and follow religiously.
I hope this helps you think about email lists differently. There is value to joining a list for creators you truly enjoy, and is a free way to support that creator as well!
