Learn how to quickly and easily create custom cupcake toppers for any occasion!
Looking to step up your decor for a party? I DIY’ed these cute cupcake toppers using only 5 supplies you may already have in your craft closet! I love finding affordable solutions to elevate special occasions. This DIY tutorial is easily customizable to any event, but I created my custom cupcake toppers for an “Ole Miss” themed Sip & See.
A Sip & See is a party thrown after you have a baby to visit, drink, and “see” the new baby! I had one with 3 college friends when we all had babies within one month of each other.
I wanted to find an easy way to decorate cupcakes, and created these fun paper toppers on toothpicks! Let’s look at the supply list and get into the tutorial.

Supplies to Create Custom Cupcake Toppers
-Scrapbook paper
-Pen
-Scissors
-Toothpicks
-Hot glue + gun
Step 1: Gather Supplies
First, put together your supply list. Choose scrapbook paper based on your theme. As I mentioned, our theme was red and blue for our Alma Mater, the University of Mississippi (AKA Ole Miss). The party was also held in Oxford, Mississippi, a fun college town that should be on everyone’s bucket list!
Planning a trip? I have written an extensive travel guide to help guide your trip and make sure you get the most out of your visit to Oxford, MS!
If you don’t already have all the supplies on hand, a quick trip to your local craft store should do the trick.
Step 2: Draw, Trace, & Cut Out Your Designs
I chose to create collegiate flags and jersey onesies for my custom cupcake toppers. You can choose any design you want to fit your theme! I drew the shapes first on lined paper to help with even spacing and straight tines. I then used these templates to trace on the back of each piece of scrapbook paper. I used 3 different patterns of paper for each design. You can also customize this based on the number of cupcakes, designs and patterns you are using.
Once you have traced all the patterns, cut them out.I left extra room on the left edge of my flags so that I could fold them over the toothpick to make it more secure. You can cut the extra paper triangles off the top and bottom after you create your folds.
Custom Cupcake Toppers Step 3: Glue
I used a hot glue gun on “low” temperature to adhere the toothpicks to the scrapbook paper designs.
And there you have it! 5 simple supplies and 3 steps to create custom cupcake toppers to elevate any party. I’d love to hear what you chose to create!
Enjoy the process,
