Backyard Patio One Room Challenge Week 1 – The Before

1 room. 8 weeks. Countless DIYers coming together to encourage and inspire. Sounds great, right?! Welcome to the One Room Challenge! Keep reading to discover my plans for our backyard patio One Room Challenge.

I’m so excited to be participating for the first time as a guest in the 2021 Spring season of the One Room Challenge (ORC)!

If you’re new to the ORC like me, it’s a semi-annual event hosted by Linda from Calling it Home and Better Homes & Gardens. 20 featured designers and countless guest participants transform a space in 8 weeks. Participants will document their project on their blog and/or Instagram accounts while linking up to the ORC page so everyone can follow along and support the other projects!

The Before: Backyard Patio One Room Challenge

I have chosen to transform our backyard. We have officially been in our Riverdale Ranch for a year and while the front of our house has gotten some TLC (see all the projects here), the backyard has been put on the back burner. So far my husband has torn down an old shed, and chopped down a tree whose root system had ruined the grass and garden beds.

In early April, I planted herb and vegetable gardens in our raised beds, and that alone has improved the space to look more manicured than the overgrown mess that was there last year.

Besides that, the space has the bare minimum. Furniture to eat and gather, but it’s not the backyard oasis I have in mind yet. We have two paved patio areas, as well as lots of yard space.

Head over to my week 2 post for all the plan details, including a project list and details on how to customize your own DIY cornhole boards to support your favorite sports team, brand, logo, and more easily and affordably.

Be sure to check out all the other guest participant’s projects. I’m sure you’ll find at least a few you’ll want to follow this season!
